Jody has spent over 30 years building Bittersweet into an Old Town institution. Starting as a catering waiter in 1986, he was soon asked to do kitchen prep work for $5 per hour. With a keen eye for innovation and a strong desire for efficiency, he worked to improve the freshness of the product and lower waste and in 1990 purchased the business from the original owners. In 1997 the company expanded with a fresh food bar and outdoor seating. 2007 saw the purchase of an adjacent catering business and building a 5000 sq. ft. production kitchen and catering office.
Orn is from Bangkok, Thailand and holds a degree in Economics and Management. She started working at Bittersweet in 2004 on the catering sandwich line and her many talents quickly became apparent. She started part time bookkeeping work, then moved on to Comptroller as the company grew quickly. Last year she took on the big responsibility of General Manager - a natural fit for her. She is highly respected by the staff for her willingness to do whatever to get the job done and loves creating new systems that allow our team to better serve our customers. Orn is married and two kids.
A seasoned sales and customer service professional with nearly forty years in the hospitality industry. Jeffrey personifies the traditional ‘work your way up the ladder’ approach, beginning as a dishwasher, then waiter, bartender, manager and for the past twelve years as an Catering Sales Manager for Bittersweet Catering~Café~Bakery. Jeffrey firmly believes in a genuine customer centric approach to maintaining great client relationships. Extensive product knowledge and a passion for food and beverage are the foundation of a great skill set.
Andrea O’Brien is the Director of Sales at Bittersweet Catering. In this role, Andrea leads a team supervising all aspects of catering operations, including sales and event management.
Andrea has worked in the hospitality, travel and sales industries for more than 25 years. Her long-term relationships with client base key accounts, suppliers, destination management companies and travel industry professionals worldwide are a testament to her experience. Accustomed to working in team environments, Andrea firmly believes in utilizing her staff’s unique talents and working in a collaborative setting to ensure that at Bittersweet we not only meet, but exceed our customers’ expectations.
Andrea is an avid reader and likes to get hold of the latest releases of history books. In her free time she enjoys exercising and visiting museums.
Jose is known as 'la machina' and started as a line cook at Bittersweet in 1992. After working under several chefs, he took the leap and became our kitchen manager in 2005. He's creative, innovative and loves to wear a hat - which is good for a chef! Jose is a family man with three children and in his spare time likes to spend time with them outdoors. His goal is some day take a very long vacation back to Honduras.
Jody is native to Iowa and is passionate about fresh food and great service. With over 10 years excelling in the restaurant industry, Jody brings a can-do attitude and Midwestern Hospitality – creating menus combined of comfort and new catering trends. After graduating with a B.A. in Communications from the University of Iowa - Jody moved to Old Town, Alexandria where she feels at home in the neighborly community.
In true D.I.Y. fashion - Jody rolls up her sleeves to ensure the job is done seamlessly. "My great-grandmother was a caterer out of her own home in the 1950's. Although I never had the chance to meet her - I like to think of what I do as tradition… not just a job."
Just two short years ago, Rachel relocated from her hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts to see what kind of opportunities awaited her in the DC Metro area. Having graduated with a degree in English Literature, she quickly decided that while she loves Shakespeare, she ultimately found herself drawn to the hospitality industry. After spending several years as a server, she then moved into restaurant management and later to catering, her true passion. Fancying herself a foodie, Rachel enjoys keeping up with the newest culinary trends and writing innovative menus for her clients. Her attention to detail and eye for design make her an excellent asset at your full service event - where, she'll admit, she gets her kicks watching all the details come together and the smiles on her clients faces!
Originally from New Jersey, Emma relocated to Alexandria, VA in 2017. She was graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Science in Television-Radio and has worked in the food business since she was 14 years old. Growing up in diners, Emma has sculpted her customer service to be able to work well with all people and you can always find her with a smile on her face. Her positive attitude and desire to make people feel happy make her a great fit for the sales team. Emma loves the theatre, singing and will always try to make your event an exciting one with the same amount of passion she puts into her stage-work.
Originally from El Salvador, Mauricio came to Bittersweet Catering in 2011 as a delivery driver and within a year was promoted to Operations Manager. He dispatches our delivery drivers, maintains our fleet and oversees our equipment rooms. Many of you will recognize his smiling face from your office deliveries. A father of three boys and one girl, in his time off Mauricio enjoys car shows, grilling and travel with his family, especially anywhere near the water.
